We are very pleased to be able to provide users with even more convenient and seamless access to school applications with the connection to the Univention ID Broker itslearning. Together with Univention, we are thus creating the basis for teachers and students to fully concentrate on teaching and learning and to benefit from the many advantages of media-supported teaching.
The advantages of the connection to the ID Broker
The connection of the learning management system itslearning to the Univention ID Broker brings with it several advantages, which we will take a closer look at below:
Connectivity saves school administrators, admins and teachers valuable time
The smooth transition for the connection between state, carrier or school instances of UCS@school and itslearning eliminates time-consuming integration efforts. Previously, this had to be done manually by school administrators.
Easy accessibility and scalability
Newly connected services are automatically accessible to all users, depending on availability and settings. This is even possible across countries: For example, if a new educational service is connected via the ID Broker, it is automatically available to all educational institutions with access rights.
UCS@school users can connect to the ID Broker once and provision essential user data on the ID Broker. Afterwards, they can directly activate itslearning and other services connected to the ID Broker in their UCS@school portal.
In itslearning, the UCS groups are mapped in the school hierarchy and both teachers and students are assigned. These are then very easy to find according to the groups and can be quickly integrated into the appropriate courses. The composition of the groups always remains up-to-date and automatically aligns itself. This has advantages, among other things, when classes and school years change.
Another advantage is the central authentication at the UCS, so that decentralized password management and assignment in itslearning and other services of the school is no longer necessary.
Fast access with single sign-on (SSO)
Students and teachers have a single login and can thus quickly access the services of all connected providers. Of course, all security regulations remain in place and allow for the full protection of sensitive data.
GDPR compliance
A one-time data processing agreement between the school management, Univention or itslearning is sufficient to secure you and your school in terms of DSGVO.
itslearning complies with the requirements of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Learn more about it here. Also check out this article where we give you practical tips on how to comply with the DSGVO.
Cost advantages for UCS@School schools
The new interface via the Univention ID Broker enables all UCS@school schools with the same sponsorship to connect to their platforms and systems in an uncomplicated manner. Compared to the individual integration of applications, this path is more cost-effective overall.
"We see ourselves as part of an ecosystem of school and infrastructure applications. We also understand the importance of a central identity management system to manage and provision user data and groups, as well as a central point of authentication. In this way, applications can be provided to users via portal or accessed via integration within the learning platform.
For us, the connection to the ID Broker is an important step towards a central service that sits between identity management systems and learning applications and supports seamless access. We at itslearning have been working successfully with Univention for years and also want to be involved in the introduction of the ID Broker from the very beginning. In doing so, we hope that our users* will be able to dovetail school applications and access them even more conveniently, so that they can fully concentrate on teaching and learning and discover and use the many advantages of media-based learning for themselves."

The ID Broker connection in practice
The connection to the Univention ID Broker is currently in advanced pilot and practical use. Among others, the connection has been successfully deployed in the school foundation of the Ev.-Luth. Landeskirche Sachsens and the comprehensive school Verl. We will keep you up to date on the latest developments in this article - so feel free to visit again.
